Nat rata. "Sammy Stops the World" is producer Bill Sargent's filming of an on stage performance by Sammy Davis in a new production of "Stop the World, I Want to Get Off." must like this show, since in 1966 he did a film version of the original production, with Tony Tanner and Millicent Martin in the leads. Isn't it time to retire this project? The show, conceived by Tony Newley and written by him with Leslie Bricusse, opened in London in 1961 and subse- quently came here, where it made a minor stir, primarily because of its hit song, "What Kind of Fool Am But lis toe ftfiiT fiME 1 1 the score, pleasant enough as it is, was never enough to overcome the plodding pretensions of Newley's morality play, in which the name of the hero, Littlechap, was meant to convey the idea of his being a modern Everyman. jytt al Some of the songs have become standard equipment for Davis night club act, but trying to adapt the show to himself is a mistake. The passage of time painfully fkfilll emphasizes the show heavyhanded reliance on national stereotypes and the show, blown up to screen size, is a gassy business.

The choppy editing, omitting chunks of aTaaai fc action, doesnt help. Updating the script and making Littlechap American only confuses, since the Anglicisms and black speech fight with each other, instead of mixing. Davis' mugging turns grotesque in extreme closeup and Marian Mercer, as his Everywoman, is so tall and so different in style that they make a very odd couple. An occasional bright spot in the movie only shows how flat the rest of it is. GEfiEUILDER IttEMFO 'Willi flit?
